For much of his life, Peter was known as Simon. Jesus saw great potential in him and called him Peter, meaning "rock," symbolizing the strength He saw in him. Yet, Peter often struggled to live up to this new identity, falling back into old habits—a challenge familiar to all of us. As the apostle Paul teaches, we must "lay aside the old self" and "put on the new self" (Ephesians 4:22-24). Like Peter, we sometimes need reminders of our new identity in Christ, a reminder we inherit through His name and spirit (Acts 4:8-12).
Simon Peter’s failures, including his denial of Jesus and sinking while walking on water, highlight his struggle with faith. In the latter, fear caused him to falter, leading to a lesson as Jesus rescued him. These experiences shaped Peter into a leader who taught the need to focus on Jesus to prevent spiritual missteps. He knew that fear and doubt could undermine faith, even in the face of miracles. Peter reminds us that when we forget we are called and loved (2 Peter 2:10; Romans 8:1, 35-39), we too will falter.
Flawed and imperfect, Peter was still called by Christ, who, in His grace, perfected, confirmed, and strengthened him. Jesus knew failure was part of being human and was ready to forgive and reinstate Peter, just as He is ready for us. Every spiritual failure is an opportunity to experience God’s grace. It’s better to follow and sometimes fail than fail to follow at all. Peter, a simple fisherman, left everything to follow Jesus and became a bold preacher, astounding many with his courage despite being “unschooled” and “ordinary” (Luke 5:10).
I’ve learned that relying solely on my own strength is a belief I no longer hold. As a founder, medical practitioner, husband, and father, my greatest achievement is dedicating my life to Christ. My mission is not just to help men and women improve their health but to guide them toward thriving in Christ as well. God has given me this gift, to help people and it is my responsibility to share the love of Jesus. As Jesus said in John 15:5, “Without Me you can do nothing.”
